I was called on my mobile by LCS yesterday. I couldn't speak at the time so told them to call me today which they failed to do.
I called them and apparently I owe them money for 6 months utilities. My utilities supplier has confirmed that there is nothing outstanding on my account.
I recorded the call to LCS and advised them of that so it's all above board.
The person I spoke to didn't have my name, trading name or any other details. He said the debt was owed by an industrial property 2 doors down. I (perhaps, no, definitely foolishly) informed him that I had property X and not property Y which he was concerned with.
(Property X was also tenanted by the current occupants of property Y for the period in question. They are aware that LCS have contacted me.)
At that point, he started to back track and said that the debt was owed on property X. It is all recorded so quite frankly, he's got no hope. However, he did not have my name, trading name or any other details but I want to know why this utility company gave them my mobile number or if they didn't, how my mobile number has been linked to a debt that was accumulated over a 6 months period prior to me occupying the property. Someone is almost certainly in breach of data protection laws and I will update as and when I get some answers.
One a side note, the person at LCS that I spoke was generally incompetent and got confused and extremely flustered when I started correcting him and quoting him back what he'd said when he tried to backtrack on the details he'd given that related to the debt. He even forgot his own employer's main telephone number when I asked for contact details. Reading the number back to him, 2-3 digits at a time, as he was giving it to me confused him!!! Won't get them to stop harassing you but amusing non the less. If they do find my full details, I will be sending them an invoice for the time I've spent trying to deal with this.
Bottom line, GIVE THEM NO INFORMATION AT ALL. If they think you owe them, let them do the work to dig your details out. Don't help them and if you've posted any details in the forum, edit and remove ASAP.
If it's an offence to chase someone for a debt that isn't owed by them, who exactly are you supposed to report it to? I can tell you right now that the police here will not be interested.
