I get free Equifax Alerts through my work, I've no bad debt (I may have been a little careless with catalogue payments in my mis-spent youth, and didn't pay the poll tax, but this was all over 12 years ago).
Monday morning I get an alert to say 1st Locate had placed a search in my file and the reason was Debt Recovery - as I have no other debt markers on my file this will have an adverse affect on my credit rating.
I have telephoned them and they cannot find me on their system, or my address. They don't know why they carried out this search, they don't even appear to know who did it. They have admitted that there is a possibity they may have been looking for someone else with a similar name.
I have raised a 'notice of correction' through Equifax who will deal with it on my behalf but have been advised to write to them myself asking them to remove the search from my file.
I am obviously wary about giving them anything with my signature on it - does anyone have any advice?
